Mini Stepping Stone Teacher Gifts

We’re winding down yet another school year, and it’s time to start thinking about teacher gift ideas! When my daughter was in preschool, I came up with a super sweet idea that her teachers loved- and the best part is that it was mostly handmade by my daughter herself!

At the time, my son was a toddler and he used to eat Gerber brand Pasta Pick-ups which came in these small octagonal plastic trays. The trays were very sturdy, so I was stockpiling them because I knew they’d be great for a future project! When May rolled around and I was brainstorming teacher gift ideas, and I remembered the Gerber trays- they are perfect for making mini stepping stones!

The project is so simple! I just waited for a beautiful day so we could work outside, then I mixed up some stepping stone mix and poured it into the trays.

I laid all the trays out on a table in a long line and I sprinkled various glass gems in front of them. I instructed my daughter to place the gems flat side down, and I told her not to push down too hard. It was really sweet to watch her work! She didn’t decorate one stone at a time as I thought she would; rather she would place a gem or two and then walk to the next tray and place one or two that one, then so on down the line. She walked back and forth, up and down the length of the table for nearly 20 minutes. Once she was finished, I went through and pressed the gems in to make sure they would set properly. I let them sit for 24 hours, then popped the stones out of the trays and I was so pleased with the results!

One box of stepping stone mix filled 14 trays, so we had plenty of stones for each teacher plus a few left over for our own garden! We included a gift card for coffee to Wawa and wrote “Thank you for being one of the first stepping stones in my education!”
